Attended Miami Senior High School and was a star fullback for the Miami Stingarees

Accepted an athletic scholarship to the University of Florida, playing tailback for the Florida Gators

Elected team captain of the Florida Gators and was a third-team All-Southeastern Conference selection

1966–1971

Returned after graduation to the University of Florida as an assistant football coach

1972–1974

Career continued as he moved on to become offensive coordinator at Memphis State University

1975

Served as an assistant coach for the Charlotte Hornets in the World Football League

1976

Moved on to Tulane University serving as the offensive coordinator for the Green Wave football team

Entered the NFL, serving as a wide receivers coach for the New York Giants

1980–1982

Hired as the quarterbacks coach for the Cincinnati Bengals and eventually became the team’s offensive coordinator

1984–1985

Accepted his first head coaching position with the Jacksonville Bulls of the United States Football League

Returned to Ohio and the NFL as the offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns

Left Cleveland for his first NFL head coaching position with the Green Bay Packers

After leading the Packers to a 10-6 regular season record he was named AP NFL Coach of the Year
